| Say upto 1970, there was very less road transport infrastructure available in Konkan. Only major highways used to pass through Konkan and the towns/villages situated beside the highway were connected by road transport. People in other towns or villages used to travel to nearby small sea-port and then travel to Mumbai or Panjim in Goa. At that time, costal waterways were very common and a number of passenger ship-services were available. Slowly, roads in rural ares were being constructed and local road transport facilities were made available by the state government. People started getting the convenience of direct transport upto their home towns. This started steady decline in journey by coastal waterways. |
Later on, with the availability of a large network of minor roads in rural areas of Konkan, people got used to travelling by state road transport bus service. Over the period of years, that network got penetrated deep into rural areas and now, almost all villages have access to road transport facilities. Still, the local bus service may not be available. But some means like private transport vehicles are available at the time emergency. The latest development is construction and commissioning of Konkan Railway that has changed the picture of journey in this region. Konkan Railway is one of the latest marvels in the world. Its route passes through hills and valleys of Konkan. The enginners have won the challenge of starting the railways in this region by constructing huge bridges over rivers and long tunnels through the hills & mountains of Konkan. Now people prefer to travel to nearby town by railway and then continue their journey to their hom town by road. |
