PICNIC   SPOTS   near   MUMBAI   and   THANE


Notes :--
This is a preliminary list of trekking sites, waterfalls, week end rest houses, resorts, picnic spots only. Many times, we think of a site to go but don't recollect or don't know the names of good sites. This list is prepared mainly for the purpose of getting many names together at one place so as to short-listing, screening and deciding on the sopt and plan accordingly. You can collect more details from your friends who have been at these places. Thi list is prepared after myself personally going to some of these sites and based on information gathered from others' visits. Details will be added progressively as and when I get time and complete my writing on these topics.

Elephanta Caves In the Arabian sea, launches, motor boats are available from Gateway of India with booking of return tickets, an MTDC holiday home is available there
Saputara Hill station, boating, rope way, museum, botanical garden approx. 50 Km towards Surat, trekking near Hatgad Located in Gujarat, near Maharashtra border after Kasara, go by road, Five to six hours from Nashik by road, GTDC resort
Bhandardara Dam, lake and Randhra waterfalls, boating while paying a visit to Amruteshwar temple Located in Nagar district, 185 Km from Mumbai



Near or Via Thane / Kalyan :--
Yeoor hills hill, sancuary or Borivali national park area and waterfalls By bus from Thane station upto Patonapada stop, Beware of a powerfull stream of water in monsoon, private bungalows are available on rent with facilities of restaurants, Forest Dept. rest house near entrance of the forest is available after doing its room booking in the forest dept. office at the base of hills, waterfalls is in deep woods called Deveechaa pada. Another waterfalls near Gaaymukh stop along Ghodbandar road
Gavlidev Waterfalls Approx. 30 minutes walking distance from Ghansoli or Kopar Khairane along Thane Vashi Railway line or Thane Belapur road, try NMMT bus No. 11, need to carry food & wate with you
Pandav Prapat Waterfalls Near Kharghar along Thane Vashi Railway line or Thane Belapur road,
Gaadheshwar Dam Near Panwel, after Khandeshwar
Sankashi Trekking Near Panwel,
Bhilawade Waterfalls and lake Near Panwel, 20 Km, after Chowk phata, near Waawandhal village, need to carry food or availale on prior order in the village
Malangad or Haji Malang Trekking for religious place Near Kalyan, go by ST bus from Kalyan railway station and then approx. 2 hours climb-up on foot, you need to carry food and water, although you can get snacks at many taparees along the path, no facility for stay at the top, there are three dargaas at the top of the mountain
Barwi dam Dam and Kundeshwar waterfalls Near Badlapoor
Malshej ghaat Waterfalls Along Kalyan Murbad road and a few kilometres after that you can go to back water of Pimpaljoga dam
Wisava Resort A small dam and lake Approx. at 2 Km from Saralgaon near Murbad
Harishchandra gad Trek, difficult Khubi phaataa via Kalyan, Murbad, Malshej or from Pune via Aale phaataa, private vehicles can go upto base of the fort over a rough, soil road over a dam, the 2nd highest, Kalsubai Peak is the highest in Maharashtra
Sajan village Mohokhurd dam, palusa waterfalls in monsoon Near Vikramgad ST bus stand, 115 Km from Thane, 110 Km from Nashik, log-house / resort for one night stay
Dabhosa waterfalls all round the year Near Jawhar ST bus stand, 160 Km from Mumbai, 80 Km from Nashik, direct road upto this waterfalls, resort available, visit to Jaysagar dam and lake also that supplies water to Jawhar village
Naneghat 2800 feet height and Jeevdhan 3768 feet height and Ghatghar near Shahapur Trekking and fort From Kalyan Murbad Malshej upto Vaishakhare village or from Junnar upto Ghatghar, dormitories or cottages in Green Valley Resort in Paloo vilage, see lake and Ganesh caves locate din nearby area



Near or Via Neral / Karjat :--
Waare village A resort / farm house near a small stream of water wih a small dam, good in monsoon Half an hour distance in a rickshaw from Neral (East) along Central Railway
Matheran Hill station, trekking Can go there by the metre gauge railway from Neral along Central Railway or by a private vehicle, trekking choice from Neral to Matheran, plenty of hotels & restaurants are available, You can go to Tapalwadi waterfalls also on the way
Bhivpuree Waterfalls in monsoon and Kondana caves near Kondiwade village Between Neral and Karjat, approx. 50 minutes on foot or go by auto-rickshaw upto half distance and then on foot, food at taparees only near Bhivpuree station or at Gogate Wanviha near Hondiwade caves
Zenith Waterfalls Near small dam at Palasdari and between Karjat and Khopoli
Peb fort or Bikatgad or Vikatgad Trekking, waterfalls in monsoon The base of fort is at approx. 3 Km away from Neral, water is available but we need to carry food
Bhima Shankar Trek, difficult and a temple of Lord Shankar Trekking starts from a small village Khandas near Karjat, othwerwise go by road by an ST bus from Kalyan or Pune via Manchar / Rajgurunagar,
Peth fort Trekking From Karjat to Ambivali village 30 Km by ST bus, after that 1 Km Peth wadi i.e. base of the fort, 3100 feet height,



Near or Via Kasara :--
Tansa forest wildlife sanctuary and lakeside view Half an hour travel by private jeeps from Aatgaon station along Central Railway (Kalyan to Kasara line), good for one night stay but no electricity, required to do booking of guest house at Forest Dept. office at Thane (Near Teen Haat Naka, LBS Marg, Naupada, Phone 2540 2522), no raestaurant, need to hire a person (may be the caretaker of guest house) for cooking of the food
Vihee village waterfalls By road from Thane to Nashik, after Kasara see for Khodala - Mokhada, then six Km upto Balwant gad, Devbandh, Suryamal, Vihigaon etc., by ST bus from Karjat or Thane towards Mokhada / Jawhar
Ratangad or Ratnagad Trek Via Kasara along Central Railway, Base of fort is in Shendi village, ST buses or jeeps from Kasara station, half an hour climb-up on feet, 4255 feet tall, you can view Bhandardara lake from its top
Trimbakeshwar and Panchwati Religious places Near Nashik, by road
Brahmagiri Trekking for religious place Near Nashik, go to Trimbak by road along Kasara Nashik highway and then approx. 3 hours climb-up on foot, you need to carry food and water, no facility for stay at the top
Walmiki Ashram at the base of Aajobaa (Dongar) Trekking, moderately difficult Via Dehane village approx. at 40 Km from Aasangaon along Central Railway, then to Chikhalwadi village within one hour walking or alternately by ST bus from Kasara, Aasangaon, Shahapur, Dolkhamb or via. Kalyan Murbad Saralgaon Shenwa



Near or Via Vasai / Virar / Saphale :--
Pelhar Lake near a small dam Near Vasai (East) or Virar
Arnala beach Near Virar, many resorts are available
Tungareshwar Waterfalls & temple of Lord Shankar Near Vasai (East) along Ahmedabad highway, good for one day picnic, a number of taparees are available for food at the top
Chinchoti Waterfalls Near Vasai (East) or Vajreshwari or Virar along Ahmedabad highway, good for one day picnic,
Tandulwadi Fort Trekking Near Saphale after Virar along Western Railway, six Km by road from Saphale station by rickshaw, bus, private vehicles, twelve Km from Warai phaataa along Ahmedabad highway
Takmak fort Trekking Via Vasai or Virar along Western Railway, Near Sakwar village after Shirsad phaataa along Palghar by ST bus, or 7 to 8 Km after Vajreshwari phaataa, Approx. 2000 feet height, 2.5 hours climb-up on foot, drinking water is available
Aasawa Durg Trekking The base of fort is in Sutarpada village approx. 7 Km by ST bus or private vehicles from Boisar along Western Railway, drinking water is available
Kaaldurg Trekking and waterfalls in monsoon From Palghar station along Western Railway, go to Manor village by ST bus and then to Waghoba Khind or Waghoba temple at approx. 8 Km, from here 1.5 hours climb-up on foot,
Zanjroli and Tarukhand hills Supzara Dam, lake side, waterfalls Dam & lake side is at approx. 3 Km walking on foot from Kelwe road station along Virar - Dahanu of Western Railway and then approx. 1 hour walking upto Supzara waterfalls
Tilse village waterfalls, Vaitarana river side or lake like Near Wada, then go by ST bus and get down at Tilsa bridge along Khardi , combine this with Wadpada waterfalls at approx. 20 Km or Vajreshwari / Ganeshpuri
Wadpada Waterfalls Via Palghar - Manor, Along Wada Khodala road, approx. 4 Km from Parali village, combine this with Tilse village at approx. 20 Km or Vajreshwari / Ganeshpuri
Vajreshwari / Ganeshpuri Hot water springs and temple From Virar or Vasai towards Bhivandi, approx. 30 Km distance
Kohoj fort Trekking Near Aamgaon along Manor Wada road



Near Lonawala :--
Karle Caves and Ekvira Devi temple Along old Mumbai - Pune national highway No. 4, nearest railway station is Malawali before/after Lonawala, opposite to the road towards Bhaje village
Bhaje Caves and Lohgad, Visapur forts with waterfalls in monsoon Along old Mumbai - Pune national highway No. 4, nearest railway station is Malawali before/after Lonawala, opposite to the road towards Karle village
Tung, Tikona, Korigad forts Trekking Located near Lonawala
Pawana dam side area, boating, adventure sports at private resorts Near Kamshet along Mumbai Lonawala old national highway No. 4
Rajmachi Fort Trek, difficult Approx. 25 Km walking from Lonawala, no vehicles, no electricity, but residence & food at villagers' homes, there are no toilets in this village although there are many homes of villagers
Walwan Dam and Bhushi Dam Dam Lonawala
Malegaon Agricultural tourism, farm house This resort is located in Baramati, Pune - Hadapsar - Saswad - Jejuri - Morgaon - Baramati route, see www.agritourism.com for more details
Madhe Ghaat Trekking Near Kelaj village via Torna fort to Shivthar Ghal



Near Alibag :--
Alibag Beach and Kulaba fort inside the sea Launches, motor boats are available from Gateway of India with booking of return tickets, alternately go by road, ST buses are available, please check the high tide & low tide timings if you plan to go inside the fort there.
Kankeshwar temple and Koeelee fort Trek and beach side fort Both places are near Alibag, launches, motor boats are available from Gateway of India with booking of return tickets upto Alibag, alternately go by road, ST buses are available, lunch facilities are available at Kankeshwar, approx. 750 steps and 1 hour climb-up to reach temple, Koeelee is 15 Km from Alibag and 20 minutes walk from the base to top of fort, no facilities of stay at Koeelee
Sagargad Trekking from Khandala village at approx. 5 Km along Alibag - Pen road, half an hour from the base to top of fort, Can be combined with Alibag beach
